Pumpout Program

Jamaica Bay Pumpout

Jamaica Bay is one of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary’s most precious natural treasures – a habitat surrounded by Brooklyn and Queens, shared by recreational boaters and more than 325 bird species. It is also a natural treasure at great risk from sewage pollution.

But starting in Spring 2004, that risk was diminished thanks to a new pumpout boat, supported by NY/NJ Baykeeper, and offered as a free service to boaters. The 24-foot workboat comes to recreational boaters at marinas or at anchor to collect waste, and then properly dispose of it into municipal sewage systems.

The pumpout boat captains also play an important educational role by providing pollution prevention presentations to yacht clubs, commercial passenger boat captains, civic groups, and the media.

Jamaica Bay boaters wanting to make an appointment can call 732-337-9262

                                   or

you can reach its operators on Channel 9.

The pumpout boat operates from April to October.

Raritan Bay Pumpout

On June 16th Baykeeper initiated its second pumpout program. This new program serves Raritan Bay. The program will use a new state of the art pumpout boat called the NY/NJ Baykeeper Head Mistress and will service recreational boats in Raritan Bay to Perth Amboy as well as in Sandy Hook Bay to Atlantic Highlands. The pumpout boat NY/NJ Baykeeper Head Mistress will operate out of the Keyport Yacht Club and will visit docked boats on a first come, first served basis.

To schedule an appointment with the pumpout boat operator call (732) 832-1499.

                                        or

the pumpout captain can be reached on Channel 9.

This project was funded by the Clean Vessel Act, BoatNJ, and the communities of Keyport, Hazlet, Atlantic Highlands, Matawan, Perth Amboy and Middletown. The project was made possible thanks to a loan from the Keyport Yacht Club. This combined funding not only helped to establish the new program but also us to offer it free of charge
