Dredging of Harbor Ship Channels

The Army Corps of Engineers and Port Authority of NY/NJ keep the harbor open for oceangoing ships. Baykeeper works with these regulators to prevent and minimize ecological harm from channel deepening. For example, we oppose the deep dredging of all the Estuary's ports to make way for super cargo ships. We advocate instead for alternatives, such as high speed rail barge systems that would end the need for costly and destructive dredging in many of our ports. We are also concerned about the proper disposal of contaminated dredge spoils.
